REACH

The REACH Regulation is the largest regulatory effort produced by the European Union. In effect since 2007, it aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks of chemicals, while at the same time seeking to stimulate the competitiveness and innovation of the European chemical industry. The Regulation promotes the research for safer substances in substitution for the pests in use; and alternative methods for assessing hazards that substances lead to, in order to reduce the tests on vertebrates.

In principle, REACH applies to all chemicals: not only those used in industrial processes, but also those that are used daily, for example in detergents or paints, and those found in articles such as clothes, household appliances and toys. The regulation, therefore, affects us all.

The REACH Regulation involves a wide range of companies belonging to many sectors, including those that may not be concerned with chemicals issues that play a role in the supply chain from the producer to the final consumer.

CLP

CLP is the European Regulation concerning the classification, labeling and packaging of dangerous substances and mixtures. It aligns previous EU legislation with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), a United Nations system for identifying hazardous chemicals and informing users about those hazards.

On 22 March 2017, Reg. (EU) 2017/542 was published, which amends Reg. (EU) 1272/2008 (CLP) and constitutes Annex VIII "Harmonized information relating to the health emergency response and prevention measures on mixtures classified as dangerous, to be communicated to the Bodies designated pursuant to Art. 45 of the CLP". The new harmonized notification procedure provides for the submission of a IUCLID6 format dossier through the portal made available by ECHA. All hazardous mixtures will be assigned a Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) number through a phased rollout process that began on January 1, 2021.
